About

The Green Science Zone is an innovative project aimed at transforming the urban area of Katowice by synergising science, sustainable development and the everyday lives of city residents. The Zone is focused on bringing together education, ecology and innovations to create a cutting-edge and green infrastructure for the future. Driven by the growing need to create accessible green spaces for local communities, the project addresses some of the most pressing challenges of our time—climate change and the urgent need to restore urban ecosystems.

Objectives

The primary objectives of the Green Science Zone cover:

  1. Supporting the development of Katowice’s urban spaces through the synergy of modern science, ecological solutions, and innovation, in harmony with urban restoration efforts.
  2. Shaping modern professions of the future that address the needs of the ever-evolving job market.
  3. Creating modern and green public spaces, where local communities may meet, collaborate with scientists and researchers, and engage in eco-friendly activities.

Rawa River Restoration and Sustainable Development

A key element of the project is the restoration of the Rawa River, which had long been neglected in the past. Thanks to the Green Science Zone, the Rawa is to become the heart of Katowice’s blue-green infrastructure, offering spaces for recreation, scientific engagement and community integration. The efforts include creating boulevards, urban green spaces and areas dedicated to environmental education and outdoor activities. These measures are consistent with with concept of the New European Bauhaus, combining aesthetics, functionality and sustainability.

Social Collaboration and Residents’ Contribution

The Green Science Zone project is being developed in collaboration with residents of Katowice, scientists, designers, and local experts. The project team regularly organises workshops, consultations and meetings such as ‘Talks in the Zone’ in order to engage and involve the society and adjust the project to their needs. Such collaboration is beneficial when it comes to creating spaces that are resident-friendly and address the real challenges of contemporary cities.

To promote the Green Science Zone project, a range of initiatives and events are being held on the University of Silesia campus, near the Rawa boulevards. The key ones include: the Rawa Festival themed ‘We Want the River’ that promotes care for local water resources; strolls and bike trips that give people the chance to explore the campus’ natural setting; and concerts organised by the Youth Council for ECSK. Moreover, the project offers lectures, talks and artistic activities such as painting a mural on the walls of the Faculty of Humanities.

Innovation and Prototyping in Green Science Zone Long-term Goals and Sustainable Development (ESG)

The Zone is to implement innovative solutions within sustainable urban planning and ecology. The project premises are to test prototypes of modern urban spaces that will improve the quality of life of residents, increase the water retention and introduce solutions decreasing the impact of climate change on the environment. Each and every measure is to initiate eco-friendly innovations and addressing the needs of the local communities.
The Green Science Zone is perfectly in line with the sustainable development goals of cities, according with the ESG principles – Environmental, Social, Governance. It means that the project focuses on the environmental protection, social integration and support for the local economy. Initiatives such as the Rawa restoration—along with the creation of urban green and learning spaces—are designed to ensure Katowice’s sustainable growth. The Green Science Zone aspires to be a role model for modern cities of the future that bring together ecology, science and social responsibility.
